Delhi Awakens to Dangerous Smog Following Festival of Lights
As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered breathing dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "critical" range.
Alarming Air Quality Measurements
Various sections of the city recorded an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the healthy limit recommended by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15 to 20 times higher than acceptable limits.
Firecracker Prohibition and Recent Developments
Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that covers the city as winter begins.
However recently, the recently formed city leadership approached the highest court to request a modification of the ban.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".
Judicial Ruling and Enforcement
Despite concerns of medical and ecological activists, the court complied with the appeal, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during specific periods throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.
Several recording stations throughout the city recorded pollution spiking around the night hours to the most severe levels recorded during celebrations in at least three years.
Regional Consequences
The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on pollutants coming from India following the events.
Chronic Pollution Problem
Extremely elevated levels of air contamination in Delhi have continued as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.
Around the festival period, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the air has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the worst readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the world's most polluted metropolis.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
This crisis in the capital is resulting from a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, building projects, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in nearby states of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, farmers regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, generating hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the capital as colder air descends.
Medical and Economic Consequences
Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous investigations.
This pollution leads to increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.
The pollution is calculated to be causing 10,000 untimely deaths annually in Delhi.
