The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
