Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
