Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to Your World
The winter content update for the block-building phenomenon has arrived — and it brings with it the first new weapon introduced into the title since the mace made its debut. The lance is now available and it might just alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you enjoy mayhem.
An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides
The Mounts of Mayhem update also introduces a host of fresh elements and enhancements related to animal mounts in the game. That driving concept made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the creators had already known it was time for a fresh combat tool.
"We knew initially that we wanted a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we designed it specifically for mounted combat," noted a lead developer. "We experimented with a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both played wonderfully when we ran our trials and also looked good for the use case."
If you're wondering whether mounted combat means you can charge at your friends on horseback, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move perfectly suited for it.
"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest functions for the spear, and it's so much fun," the developer continues. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and deal more damage [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for knightly combat."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The chaotic fun can extend beyond there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are very late, [spears are] perfect for strapping on the wings and flying forth and creating genuine chaos," she suggests.
In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now possible, and it needs to become an competitive event without delay.
Another significant inclusion in this new update is the Nautilus. This underwater creature, which is modeled after the seashells found in-game for years, can be domesticated and mounted for submarine exploration. Not only will it transport you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also maintain your air supply, so there's no necessity to surface for fresh air.
The remaining new features are mostly things that are out to get you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, frequently with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in defeat the Drowned, though, you can claim the zombie Nautilus — or the standard version, for that matter — with a spiky fish.
"We've long considered this issue for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the ideal opportunity to also introduce something for aquatic environments," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a number of concepts for sea mounts that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked compelling, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."
She also notes that there are actually a pair of variants of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you encounter underwater."
Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks
Other additions include the Parched, desert-exclusive undead archers that can endure the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you venture in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their ribs poking out. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a similar rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.
The last two things on the drop's list are refinements, including some much-anticipated tweaks to riding horses. Now, you can ford bodies of water while mounted on a horse. Also, netherite horse armor is now available at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the ultimate protection it is worthy of.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
All told, the year-end release of the year is a solid offering. The spear on its own — and the potential for chaos — would have seemed like a significant enhancement. Combine that with the Nautilus, and more things seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.
The Mounts of Mayhem update is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
