Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
