The Princess of Wales's Annual Christmas Musical Celebration Honours Community Volunteers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with attendees featuring royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.
The 1,600 guests will listen to a selection of carols, music and readings from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Focusing on Compassion and Love
The focus of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.
Attending the event are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain cancer, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often quietly and unspoken, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the concert.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own steady comeback to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, last month delivering her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".
Performance and Potential
Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by talented youth performers supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the late Duchess of Kent to widen access to music lessons.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been supported by the trust, with awards contributing to instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "amazing" to be taking part in tonight's service.
"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," the musician remarked. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.
A Family Affair
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.
Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.
That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, recipient of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for community pantries.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.
Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."
The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by television on December 24th.
