Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
