Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
